Cockatoos stepped off a mat when their own weight blocked the task
Goffin’s cockatoos stepped off a mat far more often when their own body weight prevented them from handing over an attached object, offering a new bird test of body awareness.
Why this was worth studying
Mirror tests are widely used to study self-recognition, but they depend heavily on vision. Researchers wanted to know whether a bird could instead recognize its own body as the thing physically preventing it from completing a task.
What the researchers did
The team tested 15 Goffin’s cockatoos. In the key condition, each bird stood on a mat while trying to hand an object to an experimenter, but the object was attached to that same mat. The bird therefore had to step off the mat to remove its own weight. Two control conditions separated this body-based obstruction from an unattached object and an object anchored to the table.
What they found
Across all sessions, the cockatoos stepped off the mat in 97.8% of test trials, compared with 0.7% when the object was unattached and 39.1% when it was attached to the ground. In the first session, the corresponding rates were 93.3%, 0.6%, and 37.2%.
Why it matters
The authors interpret the result as evidence that the birds could distinguish when their own body was causally obstructing the task, extending body-awareness testing beyond primates and beyond visual mirror tests.
Limitation
This task is not equivalent to mirror self-recognition, and differences in force or geometry between conditions remain possible cues. The study supports a narrower claim about recognizing the body as an obstacle in this task.
